JEREMIH WINS 3 AWARDS, JENNIFER HUDSON AND GOSPEL ARTISTS THE BROWN SISTERS WIN 2 AWARDS EACH AT

29TH ANNUAL CHICAGO MUSIC AWARDS 

 

CHICAGO (January 26, 2010) -- Jennifer Hudson walked away with Entertainer of the Year and Best Female Vocalist honors from the Chicago Music Awards on Sunday, January 24, but the top winner in 3 categories was hot newcomer Jeremih who was nominated for 4 awards and walked away with 3 at the 29th annual awards ceremony.  Jeremih won for Best New Entertainer, Best R&B Entertainer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.  His producer Mick Schultz won for Record Producer of the Year.  The Brown Sisters, a popular gospel group won for Best Gospel Entertainers and won Best Gospel Album/CD for “Awesome God.”  Among the youth contingent, Chi-Town Breakers won for Most Talented Kids Under 12 and Brickheadz Dance Crew won for Most Talented Teens 13-19.

Other winners were legendary R&B artist Marshall Thompson of the Chi-Lites (Most Outstanding Group) who performed with his granddaughter special guest Ta-Ta Blaz,

Best Hip Hop/Rap Album/CD “Category 5” by Twista, Best Classical artist Rachel Barton Pine, Best Latin entertainers Bandoleros, jazz trumpeter Corey Wilkes, Best JazzAlbum/CD for “Abstract Pulse,” Best Country/Western entertainers The Henhouse Prowlers, Best Rock Entertainers Smashing Pumpkins, Best Hip Hop/Rap Entertainer Common and others. 

 

A highlight of the evening was the performance of a song, “Shango for Haiti” written especially for Haiti by Haitian vocalist Raphael St. Vil (better known as Rafo) of Rafo International Combo de Chicago.  Shango is the Yoruba god of thunder and lightning and a symbol of resistance.  Earlier in the evening during the VIP Reception, the group also performed “Chicago,” the winning song which was produced in honor of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, Chicago’s founder. 

 

The Chicago Music Awards which celebrate the connectedness of all people through music was held on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Alhambra Palace, a dining and entertainment complex located at 1240 W. Randolph Street.  It was co-hosted by Marshall Thompson of the Chi-Lites, NBC-Channel 5’s Saran Dunmore, bluesman Frank Pellegrino and pop performer Demi Lobo.  The 29th annual Chicago Music Awards was dedicated to “Health Awareness” to raise consciousness about the lack of health care in the entertainment industry.     

 

On hand to pick up LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS were legendary Country/Western singer and producer Calvin Martin Stallard, radio icon & record producer Lucky Cordell, and veteran Polka star Bruce Korosa.  Award of Honor recipients on hand were radio personality and news anchor R. Veronica Williams and Vergil Wilks. 

Each year, the highly anticipated CMA pays tribute to Chicago’s rich and diverse musical heritage. Nearly 200 artists in 43 categories ranging from Pop, Reggae, Blues, Jazz, Rock, Country & Western and Gospel to R&B, Soul, Hip Hop, Latin, World Beat and more compete annually at this festive event, the only one of its kind to honor entertainers across musical genres in the Chicagoland area.
